New for 2009-2010 season
The Bay Area Swim Team is expanding to include practices at the Northland College pool on Mondays and Wednesdays.  We are excited to involve more Ashland families in our team.  Sara Hudson with Ashland Parks and Rec will be handling the administrational duties.  Gretchen Burke, Amy Ammon, and Sara will be coaching kids in the Northland pool.  Swimmers are welcome to come to any practice and location.  The swim team has always thrived on allowing kids to participate as much as they want, and generally swimmers will not be required to attend practices at specific facilities.   The coaches may encourage a few special days where they try to get all the kids together at one facility.  This new expansion is a work in progress, and feedback from parents can be directed to the swim team steering committee and officers below.

SWIM MEET TUTORIAL    (So you want to race?)

How to sign up

-Entry forms will be handed out on the week before the meet.

-Fill out the events that you want to swim.  You can swim a maximum of 5 events (maximum of 4 individual events and maximum of 2 relays).

-Individual events are usually freestyle, breastroke, backstroke and butterfly in various distances (25-50 yards for 8 and under, 50-200 yards for older kids).   Relays (4 swimmers) include all freestyle or one swimmer doing each of the above stroke (medley).

-You may request a relay team but coaches will make final team decisions.  All swimmers that are attending the meet are expected to fill in relay teams as needed to support the team!

-Entry forms must be handed in to coaches by the end of Tuesday’s practice.  If you miss handing in your form, please call or email Peggy Burkman at 373-2615 pburkman@charter.net by 8:00 pm on Tuesday to get your child entered.

How a swim meet works

-Swim meets start with a set schedule of events that cycles various ages, strokes and distances.  Your events will have a number ranging from 1-99.  The meet will start with event #1 and keep going until done with the last event.  There may be no specific times for each event; they will start when they come up in order.  You can roughly tell when you event will start by judging how quickly they are moving through the schedule.  Meets sometimes take all day long, starting at 10-11 am and ending at 3-4 pm, but a swimmer may be done with his/her events and depart early.

-Swimmers should arrive about 1 hour before the start of the first race to do a warmup swim.  Coaches also need to mark the arms of the swimmers with their event and heat numbers.

-Once a swimmer is signed up for an event, changes are generally not allowed.

-Parents and swimmers should approach our coaches with questions instead of talking to meet officials.

-Please inform a coach if a swimmer cannot make a meet he/she is signed up for.

Things to bring

-Extra towels, as the swimmers will be in and out of the pool many times.

-Food, although there is usually snack and lunch food served at the meet.

-A cushion to sit on hard bleachers

-A highlighter is useful to mark upcoming events of interest in the program

-Remember to allow extra time in bad weather
